I missed it again as I was out the whole day and this time, I totally regret not being able to join in. It was a good discussion about games of the decade and kudos to everyone for mentioning genre defining titles as GeOW, RE4, FFX, GTA3, HL etc. Double Kudos for not mentioning great but ridiculously over hyped games such as ICO, SOTC (Demon’s Souls btw, also falls in this category).
But why no mention of the game that proved the turning point for the entire videogame industry, the game which introduced most commonly used genre of today such as “open world” and “sand box”. The game that looked jaw dropping to the nth degree back in 2000. Shenmue is, without a shadow of doubt, one of the greatest games ever created. If only it originated on PS2 and not on the dying DC, it would’ve been a huge success and we would’ve not still crying for the series to get a proper closure. I’ll have to admit that Shenmue’s fate was the reason I started purchasing original copy of every game that I loved to death.
Although it’s impossible to pick 2-3 games out of a fantastic decade for gaming, you guys did a good job of mentioning few of the gems out there. Some games also deserve special mentioning of giving their respective a genre much needed boost such as Jak and Daxter and Super Mario Galaxy for re-inventing 3D platforming way back in 2001 and then again in 2007, Devil May Cry for introducing highly stylized and blazing fast game-play mechanics, HALO and Counter Strike for their extremely addictive multi-player, The longest Journey for giving new life to adventure game genre. God, I can go on and on….
Thanks for bringing back those good ol’ memories of tons of hours spent on quality gaming.
